Compatibility Without a Score
The I Ching does not provide a permanent compatibility percentage. A relationship is a changing system, and the Book of Changes is better suited to asking how two people are interacting now, where tension is developing, what supports harmony and what may require adjustment. Used this way, an I Ching compatibility reading can complement—not replace—direct conversations about values, trust, boundaries and goals.

Compatibility Is More Than Attraction
Strong chemistry can coexist with incompatible goals, while a quieter connection can grow through reliability and shared values. An I Ching reading can help you examine the pattern around a relationship, but the real test is how two people behave over time.
Ask About the Dynamic, Not the Score
Instead of asking “Are we 90% compatible?” try “What is the central dynamic between us right now?” or “What difference between us needs the most attention?” These questions fit the I Ching’s emphasis on process and change.
Five Compatibility Areas to Compare
- Reciprocity: Are both people investing?
- Communication: Can difficult topics be discussed?
- Values: Do major life priorities fit?
- Boundaries: Can each person say no and remain an individual?
- Direction: Do both people want a similar kind of relationship?
Hexagrams as Relationship Themes
A few traditional themes can be useful prompts. Hexagram 31 may suggest influence or attraction; 32 can prompt questions about what sustains continuity; 37 can focus attention on roles and responsibilities; 53 can suggest gradual development; and 60 can raise questions about limits and agreements. None of these hexagrams automatically declares a relationship good or bad.
What a Difficult Hexagram Actually Means
A challenging image does not prove that a relationship is doomed. It may point to friction, delay, imbalance or a need for clearer boundaries. Compare the symbolic message with actual behavior before deciding what it means for your relationship.
What a Favorable Hexagram Does Not Mean
A harmonious reading is not permission to ignore inconsistency, dishonesty, incompatibility or coercion. A reading can feel encouraging while the real-world relationship still needs evidence of mutual respect and effort.
Compatibility Can Change
People change jobs, goals, health, family roles and expectations. A relationship that worked easily at one stage may require new agreements later. This makes periodic reflection more useful than assuming one reading defines the relationship forever.
When Two People Get Different Readings
If both partners consult separately, they may receive different symbolic pictures because they are asking from different perspectives. Use the contrast as a conversation prompt rather than trying to decide which reading is “correct.”
Use Compatibility Readings to Create Better Questions
The most useful outcome is often a practical question: What expectation have we not discussed? Where are we mismatched? What is working that we should protect? What would need to change for this relationship to remain sustainable?
